Batting Advice for Pickleball Professional Athletes

Ⅰ. Pickleball grip:

The grip is the key to determining the quality of pickleball's shots. The “Oriental grip” (similar to a handshake) commonly used in pickleball is suitable for most scenes: the tiger's mouth is aimed at the intersection of the upper plane of the pickleball handle and the right side, and the fingers fit the handle, taking into account the stability of the force and the flexibility of the adjustment of the surface.

Two misunderstandings need to be avoided: one is that the grip is too tight and the wrist is stiff. It is recommended that “the strength should be based on the handle of the racket not shaking, leaving room for fine-tuning of the fingers”; The second is that a single grip should deal with all pickleball types-the backhand shot can slightly extend the index finger forward to enhance control, and tighten the little finger when serving to enhance explosive power.

Ⅱ. Pickleball core batting skills:

1. Pickleball forehand shot:

The forehand is the dominant side in pickleball. Professional players recommend maintaining a ”low center of gravity standing position": feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and the point of hitting the ball is in front of the body (waist height) to avoid excessive back swing and delay the shot. Exert force to turn the belt arm, and then swing to the shoulder after hitting the ball to ensure a stable trajectory.

The key is “batting depth”: Give priority to hitting the pickleball into the opponent's back half, forcing him to retreat. In case of a slow ball, the elevation angle of the racket surface can be increased to hit a deep ball with a spin; in case of a fast ball, the back swing is reduced, and the direction of the ball is controlled with a “fast block”.

2. Pickleball backhand shot:

The backhand is the weak link of pickleball. The core recommendation is to "simplify the movement”: give priority to stability, the hitting point is slightly closer to the body than the forehand, and the “push + light lift” is the main one. The wrist is fixed, and the shoulder strap is used to slap the surface to prevent wrist flips and mistakes.

Advanced players can try “cutting the ball”: when hitting the ball, the surface of the shot is slightly inward, rubbing against the side of the pickleball to create a side spin to disrupt the rhythm, but the strength needs to be controlled to prevent going out of bounds.

3. Pickleball serve:

The core of professional pickleball serving is “precise drop point": after standing on the tee line, the ball lands first and then hits, and the shot point is lower than the waist to prevent fouls. Most people choose “flat serve", the surface is perpendicular to the ground, swing to the opposite side, aim at the opponent's inner or outer corners, and use the drop point to change the rhythm of the hair extension.

Occasionally, it can be interspersed with “high-hanging serve": add the elevation angle of the racket surface to play a high-altitude ball, and use the falling time to disrupt the opponent's position, but you need to control the height and drop point to prevent being directly intercepted.

4. Pickleball volley:

Volley is the key to scoring in front of the pickleball net. The secret is “small movements + quick response”: move your feet slightly, face the ball in advance, do not swing back, and quickly return the ball with “blocking”, giving priority to the opponent's gaps (midfield, sideline).

Pay attention to the "angle of the shot": The high ball is slightly pressed to prevent the return of the ball from being too high, and the low ball is slightly raised to prevent the net from falling; The body moves with the ball, keeping the point of the shot in front of it, to prevent the ball from reaching out. Unbalanced.

The essence of professional pickleball batting skills is “experience accumulation and detail control”. Enthusiasts do not need to pursue complex movements. First, they can solidly master the pickleball grip and basic batting stability, and then gradually increase the rhythm changes to improve the quality of batting and enjoy the fun of pickleball competition.
